2 cups flour

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 ¼ cups strong brewed coffee

¼ cup brandy

5 ounces unsweetened chocolate

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract

Frosting:

1 pound confectioners' sugar

1/3 cup cocoa

1 cup melted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Oh, dear, it’s all a big muddled mess now. If that man had one smart bone in his body, he could have avoided all of this. But no, he had to go and lose the one thing you held dear in your living room. Deep breaths. Again.

Let’s make a cake. We’ll all feel better then. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 3-quart bundt pan, then dust it with cocoa powder. Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together. A lumpy cake will only make everyone more miserable.

Combine the coffee, brandy and butter in a double boiler, whisking occasionally. Then put it all into a bigger bowl (don’t worry about the dishes; if your man loves you, he will have installed a dishwasher, thus saving you the toil of doing them yourself) and beat in the sugar, then add the dry ingredients.

Pour the mix into the pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. While you’re waiting, have a seat at the table and make a list of all the ways he’s wronged you in nearly 30 years of marriage. Get an extra sheet of paper if you must.

When the cake is cool, unmold it and then start the frosting. Beat all ingredients together until smooth, then spread it on the cake. Don’t bother serving this to anyone. After the day you’ve had, you’re going to need to eat the whole darn thing.
